Ashtanga Yoga has split. Some Ashtangis practice and teach only what Sharath Jois says is right. Some are willing to apply what they’ve learnt over time to modify and diversify the practice. The debate has caused big riffs and many teachers have been stripped of their KPJAYRI authorisation to teach. It all seems incredibly un-yogic.
The Ashtanga Yoga Bali Research Centre believes in diversity. So much so that they’ve dedicated their entire Conference in 2019 to the very subject. 9 global leaders in the science of Ashtanga Yoga will congregate for 6 glorious March days in Bali.
Long-term Ashtangis and students of Pattabhi Jois, Prem and Radha Carlisi are hosts. Here at The Mat Movement, we’re very lucky to have recently practiced with the pair and we’re enjoying our newfound Ashtanga morning routines.
If Ashtanga is your thing, take a look at the conference. Teachers from the UK, Bali, Australia and the US will each present on how they’re practices have diversified and how tailoring their approach to the core principles has been a benefit to them.

Best of luck with the event Prem and Radha. We’re glad there’s already been a ton of people applying well in advance and we’re sure it will be a great success.
